My line of Rowells migrated to Carlowville, Alabama from the Darlington District of South Carolina in the 1830's and many decendants resided in the general area untill late in the 20th Century.
I believe that sirname pronounciations more than likely pass from generation to generation. Our pronunciation is Rowell, like Powell, though it has often been slurred to Ral like pal.
In the late '70s I baught a Welsh Corgi pup who's grandsire was the renowned champion, Velour of Rowell.Spock, as the grandsire was called, came from England and the elderly kennel owner there, I was told, prounounced the kennel name, Ro'll.Somewhere I have read that the name is derived from those who lived on the rows by the river, so Ro'll, is within reason.I prefer Rowell like Powell, but unfortunately, most who read the name tend to visually confuse the R to a P and call us Powell, anyway. This happens at least 90% of the time with the uninformed. One of the pronounciations that tends to disturb me is Row-well. When I hear it I ask if they pronounce Powell as PO well, or Howell as HO well.Pronouncing it like the Spanish name Raul is definately, absolutely, without a doubt forbidden.I do tend to be a little bad sometimes, but I do happen to be a Rowell (like Howell). My email address is [email protected].
