Dear Margaret, I am a descendent of a James Rowan from Renfrew. My James was born in Jordanhill, Renfrew, in 1799. I couldn't find information about your James Rowan except for the following: the date of his marriage to Janet Stewart was 14 June 1777 in the Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew. I did find the following children: James Rowan, born 24 Feb 1780, Low Church, Paisley (of course you know about James) John Rowan, christened 4 Mar 1782 in Low Church, Paisley Elizabeth Rowand, born 5 Feb 1784, Low Church, Paisley William Rowand, christened 4 Sep 1785, Low Church, Paisley Charles Rowan, christened 9 Dec 1787 in Low Church, Paisley Robert Rowand, born 25 Nov 1790, High Church, Paisley Agnes Rowand, born 25 Feb 1792 and christened 28 Feb 1792 in Low Church, Paisley I think it's quite possible our families connect somewhere along the line. I'll look more closely at the records I have and see if there's something I can find. My James Rowan is descended from Matthew Rowan, b. 1753 in Balshagarie, Govan, Lanark, Scotland. There are supposed to be many Rowans buried in Govan Old Churchyard and most of them in Lanark & Renfrew counties are supposed to come from the Rowan families in Govan. The children's names listed above are all very common names in my Rowan family, with the exception of Charles. The James Rowan in my family had a son named Matthew Rowan, who emigrated to the United States in the 1850s. He kept a journal, which we have. If I find any additional information to help you, I'll post another message. Laurie Rowan Eichert, California Notify Administrator about this message?
