Carmen,
We haven't sent e-mails in several years. I don't know if you are still into Row genealogy. I have been trying to solve the riddle of who Benjamin Row of Barbour Co. WVA. You probably already have figured this out but Benjamin's second wife Sarah, is the same Sarah that married Andrew Sluss (b1809 in Frederick Co. MD). This Andrew is the son of Mary Ann Row who is the sister of Michael Row as you have noted in some of your bulletin board communications.
I have been trying to use the Sluss and Rinehart families from Maryland to help in tracing Benjamin's parents (his first wife was a Rinehart born in VA). Benjamin Row and Andrew Sluss must have been good friends. The both seemed to have moved to the Shenandoah areas at about the same time and they both subsequently moved to Barbour Co.I've noticed they lived almost next door to each other in Junior.
Andrew Sluss' ancestors lived very close to the George/Michael/Arthur Row brothers in Frederick Co. MD that you have mentioned. I keep trying to link Benjamin to that group of Row's but I haven't done it other than through the sluss link back to Mary Ann Row.
Using the Rineharts leads to another group of MD Row's. There is a George Row who consistently lives near the Rinehart family in the part of Frederick county that eventually became Carroll Co. in 1837 (east side of Monocracy River). This George is probably linked to the George/Michael/Arthur Row brothers as well but I have not found the proof.
You probably already know all that follows but here it is anyway in case this might help in any of your research:
This particular George Row is in the 1850 census for Carroll Co. MD and is 77 years old and born in PA. His wife Margaret is 56 and also born in PA. Son Henry (27), Isreal (28 - and I think named after a former neighbor Israel Rinehart), Ephriam (22), Sarah (17) and Lydia (15) are all listed as born in MD.
I believe this is the same George Row in the 1840 Carroll Co. MD census. His age is from 60-70 and his wife is 40-50. The kids match pretty well also as do the names of the neighbors. (Males - 1(5 to 10), 2 (15-20), 2 (20-30), 1 (40-50) and 1 (60-70).Females - 1 (under 5), 1 (5-10), 1 (15-20) and 1 (40-50)).
In 1830 I think this George is the one on page 255 of the Frederick Co. MD census (with neighbor Israel Rinehart). Again the ages of the people in this household are consistant. (1M (under 5), 2M(5-10), 1M(10-15), 2M(15-20), 1M(20-30), 1M(50-60), 1F(under 5), 1F(5-10), 1F(50-60). The ages of the other George Rows households in MD (and in PA) do not seem to me to match very well. There is some information on the message boards about a George Row (brother of Michael and Arthur, son of Andreas) living in Frederick Co. and then moving right over the Monocracy river into Carroll county. I think he probably didn't move because Carroll County was created in 1837 from that part of Frederick Co. He had been on that side of the river the whole time. If all this is true then thisGeorge would be related to that line of Row's. I have not been able to definitely prove it though.
In 1820 I think this George is the one listed on page 176 of the Frederick Co. MD census. Israel Rinehart (and others) are consistent neighbors same as on the 1830 census. The 1820 census shows 2M(under 10),2M (10-16), 2M(older than 45 - George's dad or Father-in-law perhaps), 1F (under 10), 1F (26 to 45).
In 1810 there is a G. Row on the Frederick Co. page 237 next door to a D. Rinehart. This Row family shows 1M (under 10),1M (16-26), 1M (26-45), 1F(under 10), 2F(10-16), 1F(16-26).
In 1800 I can find the same D. Rinehart on page 184 for Frederick Co. but there is no George Row very close to him. John, Arther and George Row from Fred. Co. census all have sons the right age to be our George so it's hard to tell. I kind of lean to it being the John Row (page 163) . The reasoning is complex (and of course subject to error) and goes as follows: John Row in 1810 lives close to George Rinehart (page 160 for Rinehart). This same George Rinehart shows up on page 233 of the 1790 Frederick census (the ages match from 1790 to 1800) and lives near George Row (also on page 233), Michael Row (page 234), and James Row (page 235). There is no John Row there but he might be one of the 3 boys under 16 listed in the family of George Row but this is getting pretty vague. Note that these Rows seem to live consistently separate from the George/Arthur/Michael Row's who were the sons of Andreas. But they could somehow be related.
I don't know if any of this helps or whether it just confuses the issue. It would be great if you had any info on any of these MD Row's (or Sluss', Rineharts, Coffmans or Sheetz). that you could pass on. I know you had mentioned in an earlier message you had several wills that listed children. I would love to know the names of those children if you have them. I have Michael's kids but not Arther's or George's.
Best regards!
John King
