It seems that all the very early folks with this surname began with the spelling as Rowton or Rowten in the earliest records I've found then over the years some changed to one of the other variations. It's no wonder then that all of us researching the Kentucky branch are having such a hard time tracking down our ancestors. I have found one individual who started out as a Roughton then evolved somehow to both Rowton and Routon as the years passed. Makes it pretty tedious to sort them all out, but I'll keep plugging away.
