Lori,
I'm sending you this e-mail plus posting it, since I made a mistake here on the original document that I'd better let everyone know about! I had to go back and read the document over again and now I think I know what happened. I thought George Clinton Rouse had written it because it went into detail about his children (or so I thought) and the "my mother Catherine" at the end meant it had to be either George or his sister Elizabeth. Now that I read closer, I'm sure it was Elizabeth (Rouse) Dewitt who wrote it rather than George. It is her obituary that is typed at the end.

You see why it's confusing, though, since it says "George Clinton was married to Martha Tomkins at the same time and place in the city of Bellville, Hastings Co. in the English Church." And then right after it starts listing children without a surname: "Ann Elizabeth was born...George Clinton was born..." So I thought it must be his children. But on reading the obituary of Elizabeth (Rouse) DeWitt, I see that these are instead her DeWitt children! Including a George Clinton DeWitt.

How soon we forget the names of Vice Presidents, hmm? I have a lot of family names that I wonder, gee, are we related to someone of that name, only to find that it was for a famous personage of the day.

Trying to piece it all together is really difficult (but at least you have a much clearer line of descent through George Clinton Rouse than I do with my Elizabeth Rouse Wall). At the moment, it looks like from what Glenn said that your line is George Clinton Rouse, Casper, Johann Nicholas (he would have been of the age to be born at sea, NOT CASPER Sr.), and then Johann Casper who shows up in Holland and in the immigration lists early in America. That means that, if this is the correct lineage, there was a generation skipped here between the two Caspers in Elizabeth DeWitt's account. That is not all that uncommon, actually, to have people not remember all the generations. But if you want to get into the details, you'll have to ask Glenn, since I don't have the early information documented by Hank Z. Jones.

Sounds like he was afflicted with a stroke and decided he didn't have long to live, so he wrote to his friend George Clinton to get the money back but the War of 1812 was just starting and his friend asked him not to pursue it right then. So Casper died and the matter was left to his son Casper Mead, apparently. There's a whole paragraph about the family trying to get the money back and who had the papers and who they talked to in congress to try to get a hearing.

I'll post on the Genforum that the document was written by Elizabeth DeWitt so that others don't get confused as well!
