Glenn,
I'm sending this reply to you by e-mail as well as posting it on the Genforum for others to read. You're right, this is very confusing. ;-) I used Caspar Sr. for the-one-supposedly-born-on-the-sea (b. 1734), not realizing that the adult on the boat was also Johan Caspar. (And that sort of gives lie to the whole lineage with Ferandus/Rudolphus unless we're talking two entirely different families.) The record claims that it was the mother of Caspar (b. 1734) who was Catherine SCHAEFFER but that doesn't seem to work well if we're really talking about Johan Nicholas m. Anna Margaretha BRINDELL. (And I don't see any other family that fits with the earlier document given by George Clinton ROUSE.)

On your post, you said the first wife was unknown but then later that James Connolly says it was a SCHNEIDER. How firm is that? The only thing I found in doing a little web browsing for Peter Caspar SCHAEFFER was this...

New York Revolutionary War Pension Lists of 1792-1795
Two fires in 1800, one in the War Department, the other in the Treasury Department, destroyed the earliest Revolutionary War pension application records. Nevertheless, certain pension records pre-dating 1800 survive in the form of Congressional reports. Represented here are the pension claims of New York Revolutionary War soldiers extracted from Congressional reports between 1792 and 1795.

What I find most interesting about the Rudolphus bible record is that he claims descent from the same line as Caspar Rouse but is descended from John and Hannah (SMITH) ROUSE. Before I read this, I had been leaning toward the theory that John ROUSE wasn't German at all and came from somewhere in New England. There was a John ROUSE 2d mentioned in the late 18th century in Dartmouth. (Taunton Marriages To the Year 1850: Miss Susannah RAYMENT, of Middleboro, and John Rouse 2d of Dartmouth, Oct. 25, 1785) If you have any Quaker ancestors from Dartmouth, you'll know that a whole bunch of them left Dartmouth sometime around the 1730s to 1750s and settled in Dutchess Co., NY, primarily in the Little Nine Partners, Pawling, and Quaker Hill area. Many of mine later became Baptists. So I'd been wondering if perhaps this was the origin of our John ROUSE as well. (Though he obviously would no longer have been a Quaker to be a captain of the militia.)

My Elizabeth (ROUSE) WALL and husband were Baptists in Norwich, Chenango Co., NY. (Many MEADs listed there but no ROUSEs. The records don't start until 1815, unfortunately.) Incidentally, there's a family anecdote (from Elizabeth's son Alpheus WALL then down to my greataunt) that Elizabeth was a red-headed German. And some story about a brother or sister of hers killed by Indians in the wilds of western New York and how Elizabeth went to get the children who survived. Have absolutely no idea if there's any truth to it or not.

Morgan Alvord, Webster, NY, 1908. Also an Anthony Charles ROUSE on the same page. I don't have the book, so I don't know what it says. May not be any relation to yours. Otherwise I haven't got anything on Anthony except from the pension records of his father Capt. John Rouse, which say that Anthony was still living when his father died 19 Jan 1834. You're doing better than I am, at least, since you've got that proof of the relationship!

I have only someone else's information intermixed with his, so that it's rather confusing (I seem to be using that word a lot!). If you'd like copies of anything I have, let me know. Do you know if Hank Jones used any of the Rouse info at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Library? Rouse is listed as one of the families whose genealogy was found there in this listing:
