Many thanks, David, for your interesting post. In notes she gave me for the family tree my mother had written the following next to your great grandfather William's name: "William left Eliza and went to America where he "re-married" and had several more children. There was no divorce and Eliza lived into her 90s. She was still living during WWII"
I found a record of a William Roughley, aged 30, married, travelling alone on the "Campania" from Liverpool to New York, arriving August 4 1900. William;s last place of residence is shown as Pendleton. Could this perhaps be your missing great grandfather? The passenger records are free to search at: http://www.genesearch.com/newyork/. You need to register first. I have only a note that William and Eliza had a daughter, Florence, who married a Corlfield (sp?) and a son, William. Please could you tell me the names of the other two children?
PS Are you living in England?
