William Roughley, Liverpool (1813-1880)
Sorry if you're looking for the army William Roughley that everyone else seems to be looking for, but I'm looking for another one.
I'm trying to trace my great-great-great grandad, William Roughley. My great-aunt told me that the family lived in Liverpool, but had come from Ireland. However, I found out from some Irish bloke that Roughley is an English name, not an Irish name, so they probably moved there in the 1200s, 1600s, or 1750s.
Right, the tree bit:
My Grandma: Alice Jane Maud Eskdale Dobie nee Wilkinson 1916-1975 (Newcastle upon Tyne)
Mother of above: Jane Bradley Wilkinson nee Eskdale 1887-1967 (Newcastle upon Tyne)
Mother of above: Elizabeth Eskdale nee Roughley b.1849 (Tynemouth)
Father of above: William Roughley 1813 - 1880
I have a little piece of card (I don't know the technical name) from William's funeral. It says that he was buried at Toxteth Park, Liverpool.I also have a very old photo (from when cameras were just invented) of him taken at a photo studio in Liverpool.
I would really love any info on him (especially parents) or on his wife.Beacuse William died in 1880, he is not on the 1881 England & Wales census, so I cannot trace his wife and other children. However, I have found a woman who was a widow living in Toxteth Park in 1881 called Elizabeth Roughley, but again I cannot be sure if it is his wife.
I checked the 1871 England and Wales census, and found a William Roughley in Toxteth Park (with a wife called Elizabeth and children called William, Edward, and Alice) but it says he was a farm hand, and the photograph that I have shows a very smartly dressed man who is obviously wealthy (and I'm not sure if they had come to Liverpool by this point).
So basically... I have no infomation worth having and can anybody help?
Also, in case it helps, the family tale is that theRoughley part of my family were leaving ireland because they were escaping the law, as they were sheep rustlers (is that how you spell it?)
Anyway, sorry for my long waffly message.Hope you can help.
Laura
