The ancestor of the Sérien dit Langlais family was Louis-Philippe Sérien dit Langlais. His real name was Daniel Serjent. His father was Digory Serjent who came to Boston ca 1674 from St. Germans in Cornwall England. About 1704, the Serjent farm was attacked by Indians in Worcestor Massachusetts. Digory was killed and scalped. His wife and baby Matthew were killed on the trek to Montréal. Mary was kept by the Indians but the other children, Martha, John, Thomas and Daniel were bought back by the Jesuits. They returned to Boston during a prisoner exchange, but not Daniel. He wanted to stay. But for the laws of the times, he had to convert to Catholicism at which time his name was changed to Louis-Philippe. Serjent became Serien because, at that time, the letter j didn't exist and i was used instead.
