In the 1810 United States Census for Virginia there are TWO (2) Pleasant ROSSERs shown as living in Campbell County, Virginia.There are also two other ROSSERs in Campbell County: William and Thomas.
In 1820, the Census shows that there are NO ROSSERs living in Campbell County at all.But there are NINE (9) ROPER households that year in Campbell County.One of these is Pleasant ROPER.Other Campbell County ROPERs in 1820 are:John, Thomas, Joel, John Jr., Henry, Robert, Ambrose and William Sr.
In 1830, the Census shows that all of the Campbell ROPERs have become ROSSERs again.The 1830 Census must be distinguished from the 1810 and 1820 enumeration in that the names age given for Campbell County in a rough ALPHABETICAL ORDER rather than a PROXIMITY ORDER.This means that the ORIGINAL canvass information had to be sorted, collated and retranscribed in order to produce the compilation, introducing an additional opportunity for error.This organization of the data also robs us of any insight as to the proximity of various households to one another.

So Thomas ROSSER appears to be between about 50-59 years of age (b ca 1771 to 1780).Capt John ROSSER must be 40 to 49 (b ca 1781 to 1790).Joel ROSSER is 30 to 39, as is John ROSSER (b ca 1791 to 1800).William ROSSER, Jr., would appear to be 60 to 69 (b ca 1761 to 1770).Ambrose ROSSER would appear to be 50 to 59 (b ca 1771 to 1780).Pittman ROSSER would appear to be 20 to 29 (b ca 1801 to 1810).Pleasant ROSSER would appear to be 50 to 59 (b ca 1771 to 1780).
Thomas ROSSER also had FOURTEEN (14) slaves.Capt. John ROSSER also had TWENTY-SIX (26) slaves.Joel ROSSER also had SEVEN (7) slaves.John ROSSER also had TEN (10) slaves.William ROSSER, Jr., also had SIX (6) slaves.

John, William, and Thomas are particularly common names in the ROPER family.Joel is a ROPER family name that appeared in the branch of the ROPER famiy headed by Charles and Ann Goodwyn ROPER.Charles ROPER's family was in Dinnwiddie and Brunswick County.
Charles ROPER may actually be the ancestor of ALL of the Campbell County ROSSERs.
The confusion of ROSSERs and ROPER in Campbell County is exemplary of the extent to which these families can be and were CONFUSED.There still exists much doubts as to whether the ROSSERs are really a distinct family from the ROPERs in Virginia or whether the confusion about the spelling simply resulted in the creation of new branches of the ROPER family with a distinctly different spelling of the last name.
