Here is what little I know about John Ross, the father of Richard Johnson.
John's parents are Jesse Helton Ross, 1811 - 1878 and Nancy Arrowood Ross, dob & dod are unknown to me. They are buried in Greenville, TN. I do not know location of births but know from correspondence that they lived for a while in Yancey Co. NC & Carter Co. TN before moving to Greene Co. TN.
Jesse Helton's father was Soloman Ross. Which is all I know of him. Where he originated, lived, & died is unknown.
I know that John had two brothers, George Washington (Wash) Ross (my great grandfather) and Sam Ross who moved to Iowa around 1900. There was also a sister, Fannie, and possibly another sister.
I am descended from Wash Ross' youngest son, Jesse Phillip who was my grandfather and Richard Johnson's first cousin. I have copies of a photo that includes John and his brothers. I also have a copy of his parents. Interested?
Do you know or can you find out why John & Melissa never married? And why Richard carried the Johnson sir name rather than Ross? I've heard one explanation, would be interested if what you find out matches. Feel free to e-mail me @ we4care.accucomm.net with any response you may have.
