George ROSS Jr, & PARKER-YARBOROUGH GA
Posted by: Cynthia Nason (ID *****1172) Date: January 30, 2008 at 15:54:20
  of 12042

According to the death certificate of Mary Jane “Mollie” ROSS COSBY HARRISON, her father was Frank ROSS & mother was Mary Jane BANKS. Mary Jane ROSS was born 20 or 24 May 1840 in Stewart Co., GA. She was an orphaned only child whose parents were supposed to have died when she was a baby. She was living by 1850 with the ROYAL family of Muscogee Co., GA. That family was supposed to have been some connection to her, but I have never been able to find one. Her foster parents were James ROYAL (shown as RIALS in the 1850 census), born Sampson Co., NC, & his wife, Annie WALTERS, born Wilkinson Co., GA. This portion of Muscogee must have been in the part that later became Chattahoochee Co., which is where the family appears in later censuses. Chattahoochee adjoins Stewart Co.
Her father, Frank, was supposed to be the Frank who was son of George ROSS, Jr., of Jones Co. Is there any info/proof on Frank ROSS as her father or that he was son of George ROSS, Jr. (b 1760—but see obit below), & second wife Polly YARBOROUGH? All I've seen is mention of a DAR application. The first wife of George ROSS, Jr., was Mary “Polly” PARKER. George & Mary ROSS were among the 11 original members of the Island Creek Baptist Church in Hancock Co., GA., which was constituted on March 14, 1794, by John Thomas (preached at the Shoulderbone Creek settlement) and Benjamin Thompson.
The children that I have listed for George ROSS, Jr., are Elizabeth b abt 1794, married David BURSON; Nancy b 1798, supposed to have died as a toddler with her mother in a tornado; William; Wiseman (or William Wiseman), born about 1801, & Frank. I have not been able to verify that this is Frank, the father of my ancestor Mary Jane ROSS. Frank’s estimated birth date would be about 1810.
George ROSS was in Hancock Co., GA, as early as 1794. He may have been in Greene Co., GA, previously.

Mary PARKER ROSS and one of their children (supposed to have been Nancy) were killed during a tornado:

The old newspaper "Farmer's Gazette" out of Sparta (Hancock Co.) had an article from the issue dated June 30, 1804, which stated:

The wife and family of a Mr. Ross, between the Oconee and Savannah rivers, in Georgia, being buried in the ruins of his house, and screaming for help; one of his slaves who had been blown about and severely bruised by the storm, but providentially preferred by catching hold of a stump and holding on until the violence of the gust subsided, crawled to their assistance, and labored until his power of exertion failed, and he sunk motionless on the pile of ruins and misery.

I have not found the second marriage of George W. ROSS, Jr., but did locate the following:
Hancock Co, GA, Supplement to Early Newspaper Abstracts "Farmer's Gazette" 1803-1806 by Faye Stone Poss:
Sat 22 Sep 1804 Vol II #61
The marriage of Mr. George ROSS, to Miss Polly YARBOROUGH, published in our paper of the 8th instant, was premature.

YARBOROUGH researcher Ann Broadbent says that the Polly YARBOROUGH who married George ROSS as his second wife was probably not the daughter of James YARBOROUGH of Franklin Co., GA. That James YARBOROUGH had a daughter Mary, but she married William PATRICK before 1805. According to Ann, there might be a connection in Anson Co., NC, where I know that ROSSes also had previously lived.

George ROSS had moved to Jones Co., GA, by 1808:

Francis ROSS Grand Juror Superior Court 5 Mar 1799 Hancock Co
George ROSS* Juror Apr 1808 Jones Co

The 1820 Jones Co., GA, census index shows Roland ROSS, George ROSS*, Duke ROSS, Jesse ROSS. By 1830, George had died, but several ROSSes remained in Jones Co.:
Jesse ROSS p436
Rolling [prob Roland] ROSS p437

Eli BANKS (p435) lived near Jesse & Rolling ROSS in this 1830 census. He previously resided in Putnam Co., GA & had moved to Pike Co., GA by 1840.

The following obituary of George ROSS, Jr., indicates that his birth date was more likely to have been about 1764, rather than 1760:
George ROSS d Jones Co, GA, 63d year of his age, 22 ult (Sep), Mon 8 Oct 1827 Georgia Journal

In the estate papers of George ROSS Jr., the purchasers included John R. MOORE, Wiseman ROSS, Mary ROSS, William ROSS, George W. ROSS, & Lazerus(?) B. ROSS. I do not know who George W. and Lazerus(?) ROSS were.

The 1840 Stewart Co., GA, census shows that Jesse ROSS from Jones Co., GA, had moved southwestward:
-       Jesse & J.B. ROSS lived near Abner BANKS.
-       William B. & James ROSS lived near George P. & Felix BANKS.

Because Mary Jane ROSS COSBY HARRISON was born in 1840 in Stewart Co., it is likely that she was somehow connected to some of these ROSS-BANKS families. Frank ROSS is not in the census for 1840. Jesse ROSS is said to have been the brother of George ROSS, Jr.

Mary Jane ROSS had two marriages in Stewart Co., GA. Her first husband was Hickerson D. COSBY Stewart Co, GA 14 April 1859, recorded 8 June 1859. In the record, her surname is shown as “ROP.” He may have been the same Hickerson COSBY, aged 19 in the 1850 Talbot Co., GA, household (#87) of an older Hickerson COSBY (aged 45, born VA)—the elder Hickerson the same as Hickerson COSBY who married Ann HARRIS?

According to a paper passed down in the family, Mollie’s husband was “Dr.” H. D. COSBY, born 1829, died 1864 of yellow fever. I have never been able to verify that he was a doctor. I have a death date for him of 8 Aug 1864. The couple were in the 1860 Stewart Co, GA, 23rd Dist., (p380) Hickerson [shown as Hickamoon in the index] COSBY HH#61-61, he 33 (or 35?) M, a farmer, Mary J., 20F, both born GA, PO Lumpkin, 33d Dist. Also in that census was an older Hickerson CAUSBY [COSBY], p376.

Mollie’s second husband was James Rufus “Jim” HARRISON, the son of Thomas D. HARRISON & Rachel TROTMAN of Stewart Co., GA. The marriage record shows their names as James N. [sic] HARRISON & Mrs. M.J. COSLY [sic]. The marriage took place 14 Aug 1866. Their known residence locations were the following:
-       Stewart Co., GA.
-       Lee Co., AL (portion now in Phenix City, Russell Co.).
-       Chattahoochee Co., GA.
-       Box Springs, Talbot Co., GA.
-       Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA.

Mollie ROSS COSBY HARRISON died 2 Dec 1929 Phenix City/RFD, Russell Co, AL, & was buried 3 Dec 1929 Mt. Olive Primitive Baptist Cemetery, Cusseta, Chattahoochee Co., GA (no marker). Jim HARRISON. born 12 Jun 1845 in AL or GA & died 6 Dec 1911 Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA, is buried in the same cemetery as his wife & has a Confederate marker.

By her first husband, H.D. COSBY, Mollie had two daughters:
(1) Victoria A. “Vickey” COSBY, born 22 Jun 1860, Stewart Co., GA, who appears to have died young & unmarried
(2) Mary Elizabeth “Bettie” COSBY born 9 Mar 1862 Stewart Co., GA, died 8 Aug 1915 Cataula, Harris Co., GA, who married Thomas SPEIGHT 13 Feb 1879 Terrell Co., GA

By her second husband, Jim HARRISON, Mollie had the following children—note that one son is named Frank Ross HARRISON:
(1) Frances Ozella HARRISON born 7 Mar 1868, Stewart Co., GA, died 23 Nov 1905, Russell Co., AL, married Momzel Lafayette NORRIS about 1892
(2) William H. HARRISON born 3 Apr 1871, GA, died bef 1900
(3) L.O. (Della?) HARRISON born 21 Dec 1875, GA, died 12 Apr 1948, bur Talbot Co., GA, married Mose L. LAWHON abt 1894 GA
(4) Frank Ross HARRISON, Sr., born 20 May 1877, GA, died abt 1959, Opelika, Lee Co., AL, married Catherine RENFROE abt 1905
(5) Susan Louraney “Stella” HARRISON born 1 Feb 1881, Phenix City, Russell Co., AL, died 5 Jan 1961 Phenix City, Russell Co., AL, married Henry Buell WILLIAMS Sr., 9 Oct 1904; Aunt Stella was the informant listed on Mollie ROSS COSBY HARRISON’s death certificate.

The three daughters by the second marriage were known as Ozella, Della, & Stella.
