I don't know if I am related, but my grandfather, Ronald Ross (b. 1887) always said that his grandfather (or Ggrandfather) was a sea captain and had a sea named after him. The earliest I have been able to trace this family is early 1800's in Portland Maine. William Ross married to Sarah (Hannaford?). William was a ship builder and sons were ship chandlers.
