Hi Linda, You've got to have more time in there. Martin Van Buren was president in the 1870s or so, wasn't he? No one would hang that name on someone born in the mid-1700s. I'm interested in this family, too. If anyone knows data on this family, please send it to me. John Ross, (s/o Francis Ross), b. c1710, probably in Ulster, Northern Ireland; d. after 1751, possibly in Frederick Co, VA, or one of the Carolinas. He was living in Frederick Co, VA in 1751, when his brother, James, died. (See court documents under James Ross.) He married ________ Wiseman, according to a paper among the effects of Jeff Ross in Savannah, TN. Also in the Ross papers in Savannah, TN, was a slip of paper giving the children of John Ross and ______ Wiseman, apparently copied by George Sloan Ross from a Bible some time before about 1870, but without dates or explanations. I figure John Ross, b. c1710, would have begun having children about 1735, that is, at about age 25. If we give each child two years, his oldest would have been born about 1747. For want of better data, I’m going to give them hypothetical birthdates. Those children were: 21. Frank (or Francis) Ross, b. c?1735?, probably in Chester Co, PA. 22. James Ross, b. c?1737?, probably in Chester Co, PA. 23. John Ross, b. c?1739?, probably in Chester Co, PA; m. Liddy Ross 24. Thomas Ross, b. c?1741?, possibly in Chester Co, PA, possibly in Frederick Co, VA. (Mary Ross Chesnut’s first child was born in 1741 in Frederick Co, VA; it may be that the whole clan had moved west by this time.) 25. Jesse Ross, b. c?1743?, possibly in Frederick Co, VA 26. Jane Ross, b. c?1745?, possibly in Frederick Co, VA; m. James Claxton, 27. Mary Ross, b. c?1747?, possibly in Frederick Co, VA Some of this family **may have** migrated to North Carolina. State Census of NC 1784-1787 John Ross Sr. 9 living in household, 5 males, 4 females, 5 black slaves John Ross Jr. 6 living in household, 3 males, 3 females Thomas Ross, 2 living in household, 1 male, 1 female Hugh Ross, 20 living in household, 9 males, 9 females 2 black slaves Nathan Ross, 8 living in household, 6 males, 2 females William Ross, Son of John Ross, 3 living in household, 1 male, 2 females William Ross, 4 living in household, 2 males, 2 females Source: North Carolina Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 1492, Raleigh, NC 27602. A couple of observations: If my guess at their ages is right, Frank (Francis) Ross, the ?oldest? son, was probably too young (about 14) to receive a land grant in 1749, which probably means that old Francis Ross, our progenitor, came to America and died in Frederick Co, VA, some time after he received that land grant in 1749. He would have been about 84 years old at the time. He had certainly come a long way from Killiecrankie. The James Ross in the list is too old to be the James Ross, b. 1760s; m. 1795, in Bath Co, VA, Elizabeth Griffith, b. 1760s, d/o William Griffith and Sarah _______ (widow Reynolds). Leah Davis writes: “the marriage bond was dated July 20, but there is no date on the minister's return, according to the Bath County, (Va.) Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns. Her father, William Griffith married (3rd) a widow, Sarah Reynolds, in Frederick Co, MD. William and Sarah moved to Bath County in 1782 when he received a grant for 19 acres on the Cowpasture River. [The land may have been later in Alleghany Co, VA.] Elizabeth (Griffith) Ross was their daughter. “James Ross bought land which abutted the Griffith land on Cowpasture River and shortly thereafter married Elizabeth. I have often wondered if James Ross and William Griffith were not acquainted in MD, as both moved, within a short period of time, next to each other on the Cowpasture River. James was living in 1823, when William Griffith died, and was living at the time of the 1850 census, but must have died shortly thereafter. Anything on this James Ross?” This James Ross, b. c1760, **could** be a grandson of John Ross, s/o Francis Ross. Nor do we have good candidates for the parents of the George Ross, b. c1760, and Jesse Ross, born 1766, in NC. BUT, since the name Wiseman appears as a middle name in those families, I would bet a nickel that George Ross, b. c1760, Jesse, b. 1766, etc are grandchildren of John Ross and _______ Wiseman. Which parent could they belong to? Would you folk that come from these lines send me more complete and specific data about your lines: dates, names, spouses, places, etc. {Penny, Sandy, Are there any Claxton neighbors to your Rosses in NC. George Ross, Sr (unknown parentage, but should be in the in-between generation; unknown existence; posited here since a son was called George Ross, Jr. But people in those days were sometimes called “Jr” to distinguish them from a cousin.) George Ross, Jr, b. c1760, in NC; d. 22 Sept 1827, in GA, at age 67; m.1. Mary “Polly” “Molly” Parker, b. c1765, in Maryland, d. 4 April 1804, in Jones Co, GA; m.2. Polly Yarborough. George had the following children: 1. William Ross, 2. Wiseman Ross, 3. Elizabeth Ross, 4. Frank Ross, 5. Nancy Ross, Wiseman Ross (1801-1852) of near Camp Hill, AL; m. 1) Elvira Harper (1804- 1836) and 2) Frances Harper Doggett (1801-1857) who were sisters and daughters of George Harper of Jones Co.
