I am very interested in this.My grandmother was born Thobiah )Mary Rosenthal in St.Louis, MO.She later changed her name to Marion, I don't know when she did that or why, but I WILL find out somehow.Anyway.Her father was Louis Abraham Rosenthal who was a Russian immigrant.I am not sure when he came to this country.Haven't been able to figure that out yet either.Marion(Thobia)'s mother's name was Sarah Anna. Her maiden name was Abrams.Anna, as she was known and A.L. as he was known lived in Louisville, KY very comfortably for a number of years. From what the family tells me, they went bankrupt during the depression and went back to New York.Marion maried Leon Jaffe, and had two sons Donald, and Louis(my father).
Now for the interesting part.Supposedly there was an illegitamate son named Louis(his mother was Anna, also a russian immigrant)who was raised and treated as part of the family, and nothing is really said or known if and when there was an affair and with whom. The 1910 Ketucky Miracode index does have a Louis Rosenthal as a child of the Rosenthal household and he is recorded as being 14yrs old at that time. There were also 3 other boys, Henry, Helmar, and I can't remember the name of the other one.
Marion and Leon raised their family in the Parkchester section of the Bronx.Leon died in 1967, and Marion died in 1994.
I don't know if I have helped you in your research or just added to the confusion, but when I saw references to members in St.Louis AND Louisville, I really am wondering if there is a relation.
