Catherine Rosencrans married William Rice. The only date I have on him is that he died between 1809 and 1813 (based on land records from those dates). Their first child was born in 1783, so the marriage was probably around then. They lived in a very remote part of New York, so it is not surprising if they lost touch with the rest of the family. Her great-great-great grandson, Clarence Rice Owens, did quite a bit of research and published a pamphlet, "Family Search of Clarence Rice Owens", California Genealogical Society, Gateway Press, 1975. Based on a census, they probably had at least eight children, but we only know of three: Oliver Phelps Rice, Charles Rice, and William Rice Jr. Oliver was believed to have been the first white child born in New York west of Cayuga Lake. Catherine appears to have been a very colorful character. She worked as a midwife and nurse, as well as baking bread for General Sullivan's army, and she spoke German, French, Iroquois, and English, but was a professed hater of books. She lived to be 105 years old. Charles Rice was my grandmother's great-great grandfather. Feel free to contact me directly. I do not have Clarence's book yet, but another cousin assembled a book on the Davisons (Charles's daughter Rachel Gould Rice married Mentor Willis Davison), and that is where I have taken this information from. The line is actually pretty well-researched, but there was that disconnect between what we had going back to Catherine, and Allen's book going forward to her, and I only found out about the book because of this forum.
