Hi Barbara,
I can honestly say I don't really know, but after some extensive experience with linking up many families, my intuition says no.I base this on knowing the place of the families and the time frame we are talking about.Dozens of miles is plausible for the mid 1800's but hundreds of miles is not, unless a family migration happened.
This is all I know about my wife’s maiden name:Her father is a 7th generation American, he believes by his last name of Rosenblatt. They believe the immigration country of origin is Germany, but they can't be sure since he only knows the name, place and dates of his grandfather, and he was born in New Jersey.
In doing Jewish genealogy research, I have noticed one thing:The mists of time end in the mid 1800's or the beginning 1800's if you are lucky.I'm not sure if Nazism caused a lot of Jews to burn their family histories to forget about them or if they keep them very close to home and never let any outsiders know about their genealogy.I suppose I can't blame them if either scenario is true.An attempted genocide would cause any group to not want to help the persecutors even if "helping" means keeping family history in their most secret parts of their houses.
Cheers!
