Sometime ago I posted several items to this website (May 26, 28 and 29, 2007 and two on June 16, 2007) regarding Baron deRosenthal, aka John Rose. He was a Russian who served in the Revolutionary War as a Rose. In 1784 returned to Russia. The items I posted from a number of sources give excellent evidence of the existence of this man; the sources are reliable, including some original letters from the Baron in the early 1800s, a reproduction of his portrait, etc. In the past few days I have been asked whether the Baron, aka John Rose, mentioned above, died in 1784. He did not. There are a number of sources/documents/letters which prove he lived until much later. He did leave the United States in 1784 to return to Russia. In John Dwight Kilbourne, Virtutis Praemium: The Men Who Founded the State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsylvania, Vol. 2 (Rockport, Maine: Picton Press) 855-859, pertinent citations pp. 1375-1376, there is probably one of the most honest treatments of the service of John Rose. It recognizes some contradictions in the records, but it is clear that Baron deRosenthal, aka John Rose, did serve with Colonel William Irvine in Ohio, and was living after the death of the Colonel. I would urge anyone interested in this Revolutionary War “Rose” to read this and the other accounts mentioned in previous postings. The above biography also gives information on the escape of Rose and others from the capture by the Indians at Sandusky, and how Irvine later wrote to Mrs. Crawford, “After the defeat, the Second in command [Colonel David Williamson] and others informed me that it was owing in a great degree to the bravery and good conduct of Major Rose that the retreat was so well effected. William had written Irvine, ‘I must acknowledge myself ever obliged to Major Rose for his assistance, both in the field of action, and in the camp. His character in our camp is estimable, and his bravery cannot be outdone ...’ ” John Rose, who served under Irvine, died many years after he left America, on 26 June 1829, and was buried on his estate of “Felks” at Revel, now in Estonia. I would also suggest a reading of Allan W. Eckert’s That Dark and Bloody River: Chronicles of the Ohio River Valley (New York etc.: Bantam Books, 1995) which mentions Rose on a number of occasions; also Gustavus Heinrich deRosenthal, and the journal he left. The following should put to rest all effort to discount the existence of Baron deRosenthal, aka John Rose. From the Deeds of Washington County, Ohio, personally examined, are: Deed Bk 43 p 446, Power of Attorney, undersigned grandchildren of the decd Gustavus Henry von Rosenthal Capt of Knighthood of Esthonia who had spent some time in North America and had taken part in the war of Independence of the US and Constantine von Buxhowden to legally protect our claims respecting a certain tract which belonged to our grandfathers in US of North America which estate adjudicated to us by the Imperial Supreme Court of the Province. His story is fascinating. Christine Rose, Rose Family Association email: Christine4Rose@cs.com website: http://ourworld.cs.com/ch Notify Administrator about this message?
