Amos Rose and wife Mourning Evans of SC

Amos Rose (born ca 1790 in NC) and wife Mourning Evans were found in the 1860 census of Fairfield District, SC. They were apparently missed in the earlier 1850 SC enumeration, but back in 1840, they were found in the adjacent Kershaw District. In 1830, the Amy[sic] Rose household in Fairfield District appears to be the same family.

The records of the 1840s Franklin Co., NC, estate of Sherwood (also Sherrod) Evans allow Amos Rose’s wife to be identified as a daughter of Sherwood Evans, simultaneously placing the couple in that general NC area at the time of their marriage. The NC location becomes a valuable tool in placing Amos Rose with the proper Rose family.

Also in SC was a William Rose (born ca 1770, based on his Richland District, SC, census records). This man was a generation older than Amos Rose. An 1826 Franklin Co., NC, power of attorney drawn in Richland District, SC, but filed with the Franklin Co., NC, court showed that William Rose and his wife Rhody were heirs to the Nash Co., NC, estate of William Rose’s brother Thomas Rose of Nash, but earlier of Franklin. The records of Franklin Co., NC, help identify Thomas Rose as a son of an older William Rose, last of Franklin Co., NC, but earlier of Southampton Co., VA. The older William Rose (wife Martha) appears to have been born the early 1720s or thereabouts.

The parallel movements of these families suggest that Amos Rose was a son of William and Rhody Rose and a grandson of William and Martha Rose. DNA testing of a descendant of William and Rhody Rose has allowed this core family to be identifed as a descendant branch of the early William Rose (b. ca 1622) of Surry Co., VA. To this point, there has been no DNA testing of any descendant of Amos and Mourning Rose, so nothing conclusive can be stated about any possible blood connection to William of Surry.

Constructing a full list of the children of Amos Rose has not been straightforward. Since his household was missed by the 1850 enumeration, the 1860 is the only one that lists the names of the children still living with the parents. Based on the 1860 census, four of those children were:

Cinderella Rose (born ca 1832, living in 1860)
Sarah Rose (born ca 1838, living in 1860)
Alexander Rose (born ca 1838, living in 1860)
Willoughby C. Rose (born ca 1839, died 1 Jul 1863 [Civil War])

The 1830 and 1840 census records suggest another son and four more daughters. The extra son would appear to be another Rose man found in this SC area -- Sherwood Calvin Rose (born 7 Jul 1818 – died 1 Mar 1888). His own name is very telling, evoking the name of Mourning (Evans) Rose’s father. Further, Sherwood Calvin Rose named a daughter Mourning Jane Rose and a son Willoughby C. Rose. These last two names were equally evocative of the correct family.

As to the missing daughters, two excellent candidates have presented themselves.

Nancy M. Rose (born 16 Apr 1831 – died 26 Jul 1892) of Kershaw District, SC, left a bible record that, along with other important information, identified her maiden name as Rose and named her two husbands, Allen W. Watts and Allen Creed. Her age fits one of the open slots in the Amos Rose census records, and she has the appealing distinction of having had a granddaughter (Nannie J. Creed) marry a grandson of Sherwood Calvin Rose named Jesse C. Rose.

The timing of the births of her Watts children and the presence of her first husband in the 1850 household of his Watts parents suggest that Nancy M. Rose was not married in 1850. Despite that, she has not been found in any 1850 listing herself – consistent with her being in the missing 1850 household of Amos Rose. Researchers on this family had previously identified her as a daughter of Amos Rose, and the current work is supportive of that. No 1860 census for Nancy M. (Rose) Watts has been found, but her children from her first marriage were apparently all born in SC.

By 1870, Nancy M. (Rose) Watts/Creed was widowed a second time and was living in Kershaw District, SC. She died in that location and is buried there in the Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Also buried there are Sherwood Calivin Rose [Jr.] and Willoughby C. Rose, sons of Sherwood Calvin Rose.

The family bible mentioned earlier states that Nancy M. (Rose) Watts’ 12 Mar 1866 marriage to her second husband Allen Creed (of Russell Co., AL) was witnessed by R. M. Collins and W. J. Collins. As to the identity of those two, the 1860 census of Russell Co. AL lists a William J. Collins and his wife Mary Collins. The Collins parents and the Collins children, except for the youngest, were all born in SC. One of the sons was named Calvin Collins, recalling the name of Sherwood Calvin Rose.

Researchers on this Collins family identify the husband as William James Collins and the wife as Mary Rowena Rose. They state that Amos Rose was the father of Mary Rowena Rose. By 1870, this family had returned to SC and, like Nancy M. (Rose) Watts/Creed, was in Kershaw District. Earlier, in the 1850 census of Fairfield District, SC, they were listed in the household next adjacent to Sherwood Calvin Rose. The wife was listed as Mary A. Collins, born ca 1826 in Richland District, SC. The year of birth is consistent with another empty slot in the Amos Rose census records. The year 1826 also has an additional significance. It was in that year that William and Rhody Rose of Richland District assigned their power of attorney for the NC estate settlement.

Besides these two, it is interesting to note that the 1850 household of Sherwod Calvin Rose included a couple named Henry and Elizabeth Watts. The wife Elizabeth was also born in Richland District, and her age (26) was also consistent with one of the empty slots for Rose daughters. However, other than the inclusion in the 1850 Rose household, nothing further has been found to suggest there was a family connection.
