Hello,
Over the past year I have found out more details about this family. It turns out that Laurinda / Lucia da ROSA and his wife, Clara Emilia (EMILIA?), were from Fayal, probably marrying in 1850-1860.And, their daughter, Philomena Augusta da ROSA, was born on Fayal ~1872.She would become my husband's great-grandmother.And, it turns out that she married on Fayal. Her husband was Francisco MOURA who was born on Sao Miguel. It seems the couple lived on Fayal as that is where their 5-6 children were born:
Manuel MOURA,Elsita "Elsie" MOURA, Ernesto B. "Frank" MOURA, Rosa MOURA, and Carolina MOURA.
It was probably 1905 when the father died, possibly at sea.It was ~1905 when the mother started sending her 3, young daughters over to Massachusetts. Then she came over ~1910, and was listed as a widow. Her 2 sons seem to have married, first, and them came over to MA / US.
What I also found out is that, when Mrs. MOURA came to MA / US, she was coming over to stay with her brother, Antonio da ROSA, in Cambridge, MA.And there was another brother there, Manuel da ROSA.They were both born ~1865 on Fayal, and migrated at around Age 20 - so 1880's.And they seem to have both married in Cambridge, MA.I believe "Tony" da ROSA (or ROSA) had children with his wife.I've found very little about "Manny" da ROSA.
As far as I can tell, Mrs. MOURA's descendants (the older generation) have no memory of knowing "Vovo's"ROSA brothers. But, I'm asking one of them again.
Is anyone else researching da ROSA families from the island of Fayal in the Azores?
By the way, Laurinda da ROSA's wife, Clara, was from the island of Pico.
