Obit for Genta Mildren Roots Skinner Hampton (1869 - 1950)
From the Seneca (Kansas) Courier-Tribune, Monday May 29, 1950, p. 1:
"MRS. GENTA HAMPTON DIED THURSDAY NIGHT
Member of the Pioneer Roots Family
Through the years, the name of Roots in Nemaha county has denoted people of pioneer stock, good stalwart, dependable Americans, contributing a lot to the building of the county.
The family lost another member Thursday night in the passing of Mrs. Genta Hampton of Seneca, past her eightieth year.She had been ill about 14 months.Her funeral was held at 2:00 Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church, Seneca, and the body was taken to Axtell for burial.
Mrs. Hampton had lived her whole life in Nemaha county with the exception of about four years.
Genta Mildred Roots was the daughter of George F. and Emma Roots, and was born on her father's homestead on Illinois Creek seven miles south of Seneca, on October 22, 1869.She lived there with her younger brothers and sisters until her marriage in 1886 to Henry Skinner, a skilled carpenter living at Centralia.Three children were born to them, a boy who died in infancy, Alice, now Mrs. Charles Rice of Manhattan, and Henrietta, who is Mrs. McIntire of Rockport, Mo.
At one time the husband and eldest daughter were threatened with tuberculosis, so the family moved to Colorado for their health.Mr. Skinner died on Memorial day of 1891, and the widow returned with Alice to her parents' home, where Henrietta was born.
On November 30, 1895, she was married to John Hampton and they made their home in Seneca.Mr. Hampton died in 1942.
Mrs. Hampton was a good cook who loved the work and for a number of years she worked in restaurants or served meals at her home.Her skill in her chosen work was not always used for profit and many a needy wayfarer blessed her for her generosity, and she never tired of sharing with friends.Mrs. Hampton was a member of the Methodist church and of the Security Benefit lodge.
She leaves one brother, Frank Roots of Seneca, her two daughters, stepson, Tommy Hampton of California, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The pallbearers yesterday were Frank Buser, Jake McDaniel, Harold Leedy, Sam Shockey, Ray Barnes, Otis Nutter."
