Here are two articles I have located which might prove to be the source of the comments quoted my Mr. Auster.

"Past Times," Hudson Valley magazine, January-June 1991, by
Robert Grumet, National Park Service archeologist, Philadelphia.
Historical series on Hudson Valley Indians. Most available at
Adriance.

Books and articles by Dr. Laurence Hauptman, professor of Native
American Studies, State University, College at New Paltz; some
available at Elting Memorial Library, New Paltz, including
"Neighbors and Intruders: An Ethnohistorical Exploration of the
Indians of Hudson's River (Canada: National Museum of Man, 1978)
and "The Native Americans: The First Residents of New Paltz and
Environs" (Elting, 1975).
