SUDDEN DEATH CALLS CAPTAIN JOHN ROOP,MASTER OF CANADIAN PATHFINDER...Served From Boyhood in Sail and Stream,Rose to Command Finest Freighters in C.G.M.M.S. was German War Prisoner. The town people of Bear river and the many friends of Capt.J.E.Roop through the province were greatly shocked by the news of his sudden death in Halifax on tuesday evening, April 16,after only three hours illness.Death resulting from a severe attack of Angina Pectoris. The late Capt. Roop was born at Clementsport,AnnaCo. The son of Joseph Roop April 8,1868 and had just passed his sixty fifth birthday. When only eighteen years old,he began the "sea-faring" training that developed him into the remarkably capable and successful first officer of many fine clipper ships in the days of sailing craft,and later when "steam" supplanted "sail" he became commanderof a number of English steamers. at the outbreak of the "Great War" Capt. Roop was commander of the English S.S. Frankdale which was seized at Hamburg Germany.And the Captain was intered at Ruhleber prison camp near Brussels,not being released until the signing of the Armistice,when he rejoined his family at his home in Bear River.A few months after his home coming Capt.Roop developed a severe case of that rare disease,Sleeping sickness, and after a long period of convaleesense,resumed his former occupation: acting successively as Commander of the C.G.M.M. ships Can. Volunteer,Explorer,Planter,Britisher,Conqueror. And latterly Canadian Pathfinder,which was ready to sail for South American ports at the time of his death. The late Capt.Roop is survived by his wife ( nee Lottie Haynes ),a daughter Joyce Boston Mass. , a son Dr. Lionel Roop,Kingston,Ont., Three sisters, Mrs.Bernard I. Harris (Ida May Roop )Seattle wash.;Miss Josephine Roop,Lynn Mass.;Mrs.Reagh Burns,Clementsport, and one brother, Rev. Fred Roop of Woltville,N.S. A Step-Mother Mrs. Joseph Roop, and A Step Brother mr. A.E.H. Chesley Kentville N.S. The Largely attended funeral service was held on friday afternoon at the Roop residence,Bear River. Conducted by the Keith Lodge No.15 A.F. & A.M. of which the late Capt.Roop was a member, the officiating clergyman being Rev.A.W.L. Smith,Rector of St.Clement Parish assisted by Rev. E.J. Barrass of the Bear River United Baptist Church. And Interment was in the cemetery of Clementsport A large number of out-of-town prominent people were present at the funeral. the C.G.M.M. being represented by Capt. Rathe of the S.S. Lady Rodney.
