Here is the info I have: In the middle 1800's (around 1844) three brothers Roney came to America from Ireland. They settled in the South. My Great Great Grandfather (I believe a John Roney) had settled in Ga., outside of Atlanta. When Sherman came through and burned Atlanta, John was asked to shoe the horses and fix the wagon wheels for the Norhtern Army. He refused. Sherman then burned his house and asked again. Again he was refused and the crops and livestock were taken, leaving only the Blacksmith shop. When Sherman was refused again, he ordered the family out of Gorgia and gave them 30 days to cross the Mason-dixon line. At this point the family walked for weeks to get to Ohio. The land purchased was split among the children and the parents. Shortly after they arrived the slaves they had owned arrived in Ohio as well. They were immediately told they were free and John Roney set them up with land that was sharecropped until the land was paid for. I do not know how the family ended up in Indiana or the in between relatives.
I do not have the information on the other two brothers, however I know they were from Ireland...either County Cork or Ulster.
I know my Grandfather Arthur Roney, his Sisters Stacy and Emma and I believe a brother Frank all lived in Indiana.
