Dear Kay
If your Nellie Rominger "died in the 60s", this is not the right person below, from SSDI:http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgihttp://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
NELLIE L ROMINGER, born 09 Oct 1909; died Apr 1995; last residence:ZIP 27284 (Kernersville, Forsyth, NC); SSN:244-30-5443, issued in North Carolina
Your grandfather may possibly have been a namesake of an individual in my Rominger lines:1.MILLARD (or Willard) V ROMINGER(CASSIUS MARION, GRANVILLE J, JOHANN PHILIP) was born Abt. 1876, and died June 16, 1918, north of Hope, Bartholomew Co, IN.He married STELLA BURNEY.She died Aft. June 1918.Son Robert R Rominger.
This is to assume you already have obtained death certificates, possibly also marriage and birth certificates for your grandparents. With death certificate, or other means of knowing Social Security number, then Form SS-5 may be requested (or without SSN, but costlier).Form SS-5 will give name of father, maiden name of mother and more.See web site in first paragraph above.
Most of the Rominger family in NC were members of the Moravian Church, which has historical records.Several useful web sites:http://users.erols.com/fmoran/morav.htmlhttp://users.erols.com/fmoran/morav.html

Maybe you would get the best help from a local NC genealogical, historical society, or Library.Since you will know NC locations, why not look at this list of Societies, for the one closest to Boone, NC.Key in "North Carolina" only, as there is no listing for Boone.http://www.familyhistory.com/societyhall/search.asphttp://www.familyhistory.com/societyhall/search.asp
Wish you luck.
