Thanks Henny,
I don't know if that's 'my' Robert Romer or not. I have since found his year of birth listed as 1840 but I don't know how accurate that was. He became a 'sir' late in life I think - probably awarded a knighthood. He reviewed books for the Athenaeum, a british periodical, but trained as a barrister and later became Justice of Appeal whatever that was. I think he came from more humble beginnings but I have no information at all on who his parents were. In William Tinsey's 'Random recollections of an old publisher' published round about the turn of the century I think, he recalls Romer as a young actor in London who was fond of a drink. He sounds like an interesting character. If I find out any more I will let you know.
Regards,
Marie.
