My grandfather said that the name Socaciu was pronounced as "So-Kautch".Is that true? What is the meaning of the name? Since the area,Transylvania, he came from was under Austrian-Hungarian rule at the time he left, he likely traveled under an Hungarian visa or passport? Would it be likely that the Romanian name was treated as Hungarian on the visa/passport? Another person told me that the Hungarian version of "So-Kautch" would be "Szakacs". Were Romanians forced to use the Hungerian version of their names on official documents ? There are several Janos Szakacs in the EI database but are a match for his age or port of departure. He was born in 1896(+/-) and stated he came to America when he was 16(+/-).Thank you again.
