Thank you. My grandfather's name was John Sockaci. His name in Romania would likely to have been Janos Socaciu. He listed his place of birth as Svard in Transylvania on his military enrollment in the US Army in 1917. He became a citizen through enlistment. I am trying to get a copy of his naturalization papers. I have sent for a copy of his ss application. As of now, I have been unable to locate such a place as Svard on any maps past or present of Romania. I suspect the name of his birthplace was butchered as was his surname. All we were told by him was that he sailed from Hamburg. He never said what port he arrived at. He said he then traveled to Torrington, Conn to stay and work with a distant cousin. He never kept any of the letters that he received from his parents or sisters. So we have nothing but Svard to go on.
