I have been chasing my ancestors across Europe for years, and have just discovered that there is a "Rasnic River" in Romania. Our surname first shows up in Austria c. 1652 as Rierschneckh, later in 18th c. Germany as Ruehrschneck, and even later in the 19th c. becomes Rasnake-Rasnick-Rasnic in the United States. I would like to find out if there are any families in Romania today with a surname of Rasnic or something similar, and whether, if when the name is pronounced, that it would sound similar to the Austrian/German pronunciations of Rierschneckh/Ruehrschneck. I would like to learn more about European migration routes along the Danube River, especially associated with religious (Protestant) pilgrims and exiles and the name of an honest, competent researcher or historian who might be able to help me.
Thanks,
Marie
