Madrers 1838 Bucharest

Hello,

I recently discovered a Romanian ancestor in my tree through the 1881 British Census. His name was John Malich Madrers born 13 Feb 1838 in Bucharest but his surname was misspelt in the census as Madress. I looked through the census again and in previous ones hoping to find another Madrers/Madress but with no success. There were several Madrers' born to his wife and him in Yorkshire and there was his marriage to wife, Maria in 1873. The immigrated to Australia in 1885 and some of their descendants are scattered around Australia and there is one, I believe that currently lives in the USA. However, my real question is: Is there any chance that the surname was anglicised? Are there any surnames similar to Madrers/Madress in Romania?

Thank you,

Sarah
