Jacques Charles Frankel born 1886, Slatina

Jacques Frankel (Franklin) is my grandfather. Had a brother named Roland, and possibly two sisters. I don't know which Slatina he was born in (there are at least three in Romania.) Family lore says they left Romania for Cairo, then possibly Palestine. Jacques immigrated to America, after first living in England awhile. Roland became a naturalized British citizen (also changed to Franklin)

Ring any bells?

Why would Jewish boys in Romania have French given names?

Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.
