Kathy,
You confirmed your family name "Becker" is German. What Alex meant was, your family was of ethnic German origins. Because they lived in Romania, doesn't change that fact, regardless of their religious faith. It just means they were German people living in Romania. They were called Donauschwaben or Danube Swabian.
