About 6 years ago my father had recieved a booklet containing all the names/adresses of Zavagno's around the world, he wrote to almost everyone in the book (hundreds) asking for any information on our surname. After many letters recieved he got what looked like a copy of an old newsletter written in Italian. We got a rough translation done and it goes something like this.......
Ongavaz were originally from Romania, wanting to leave and emigrate to Italy. To sound more "Italian" the name Ongavaz was spelled backwards to create the name Zavagno. As far as we know this happened in the 1500's. I know this isn't much information but at least it's a lead! Please post a follow up if you have any more information!!! Maggie.
