my name is Marco Petrů, I live in Modena (North Italy) and I’ve been working on my genealogy search since september 2003. I discovered that Petrů family (my ancestors) lived in Italy since 1500/1600, in Mesagne, a little town near Brindisi – Puglia – South Italy. I got many documents of this period. The problem is: where do they come from?
During 1400 -1500, under Turkish attack, many people moved from East Eeurope to West. From Albania a lot of people passed Adriatico Sea and reached italian coasts, where estabilished for good living condition. Probably my ancestors came from East Europe, Czech, Romania, Slovenia, Moldava ...
I’m not looking for east ancestors of 1400/1500, it should be quite impossible. What I’m searching now is the origin of the surname Petrů.
Of course I tried searching on the web, there are thousand of Petru, Petrů with different final accent (like Petrů). Moreover, I discovered that often the surname is both indicated as Petrů or Petru… In this way, is very difficult know if a Petru of Praha is a Petrů, a Petru or a Petrů (white pages).
The problem I pose is: is it possible now find out the distribution of my surname in east Europe? Are there data base or search motor that can distinguish the different surnames? Or is a linguistic problem?
I'd like contact some Petrů or Petru interested in genealogy search.
With Best Regards
