I am posting to this forum hoping someone somewhere can help me find out if the famous Romanian composer, Ciprian Porumbescu is my great grandfather or great uncle...
Briefly, my grandfather on my mother's side was John Porumbescu. We only found out my mother's true heritage recently, and after her passing. We found out that my grandfather, John and his wife Pandora (both deceased now), fled Romania in the early 1900's and came to South Dakota under an assumed identity. They later moved to Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, where there was a Romanian community. They bought a farm and lived there hidden away from the world in great fear. Each sibling on my mother's side carried some deep, dark secret to their grave, including my mother. When my Uncle Dave passed recently, a cousin I never knew I had, asked him on his dying bed, what that secret was. My Uncle Dave told my cousin that he would never speak of it, and that he would take the secret to his grave. Only one sibling of John and Pandora Porumbescu remains living, and that is My Uncle Jack. The most he has told his family, those cousins I only recently found out I had, was the true identity regarding their given name -- "Porumbescu." He said that his father and mother fled Romania after some argument that resulted in something terrible happening.
My grandfather and grandmother, John and Pandora, were from Moldavia. After doing a search on the internet, low and behold, I was led to Ciprian Porumbescu, the noted Romanian composer! I believe that I am a relative of Ciprian Parembescu and so also is my sister, and those cousins I never knew I had.
The information that I need, (and my sister and I are consulting our Romanian priest here as well for his help), is: Did Ciprian Porumbescu have a brother or a son namedJohn? I understand Ciprian was not only a famous Romanian composer but also a political activist, who was put in prison at the age of 22. He died 6 years later, an imprisoned man.
We, here wish to know our true identity on my mother's side, and what are relation to Ciprian is. To dig further, we'd like to track down exactly what happened to my grandfather and grandmother, Pandora and John, that made them have to flee Romania and come to Canada.
