Surname Mandiuc

Does anyone know the origin of the surname Mandiuc? It is my wife's maiden name (she's from Siret, Jud. Suceava) and may be a Romanianised version of a Russian or Ukrainian surname as her grandfather was a Red Army soldier who never returned home after WWII. I don't know where in the Soviet Union he came from or even if Mandiuc was his original surname or a Romanian name he took on later. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I'm trying to trace a family tree for my son. Thanks
