The name "Gustina" could also be taken as "Justina" Hensel. Justina was a common name in the early days.
Here is brief information on the settlers. Kulm is a village, which is in Bessarabia.
Cataloi; Colelia, Kulelie are all the same.
It’s a stony hilly district, most of the settlers were of German descent. They originated from the Pfalz/Rhinland district in Germany and Alssas, France. In 1805, they ventured to the Warsaw, Poland area. A few years later FriedrichWilhelm moved them to East Prussia. From there they travelled to Krasna Bessarabia in 1914.
In 1810, a another group from the Baden, Wüttemberg, area in Germany, went to South East Russia, to the Odessa area.
In 1876, some settlers from villages in Bessarabia were looking for better land, travelled south into the Dobrudscha.
New villages were built, with churches and schools.
New villages were being built in; Malkotsch (Malcoci); Kulilie (Cataloi); Mangeapunar, (Costinesti); Tekirghiol; Grosspallas: Ali Anife Calfa (Kalfa);
When the new settlers arrived, already there were Romanian and Turkish inhabitants in the area.
Most of the new settlers did not believe in war, so they decided to leave their homes behind and go to a more peaceful land, like North America. Many of them settled in the North Western States in the USA, and in Western Canada.
Fr.Peter A. Riffel OMI, was born in Kulelie (Cataloi), studied in Germany and went to Canada. He was stationed in Winnipeg, Man. Regina, Saskatchewan, and Vancouver, BC. He retired and died in Calgary, Alberta.
