Need Help!!! Have Hungarian Romanian ancestor who spoke German

I just found out that my John Mike b. abt. 1889 according to his marriage license in 1908 in Pine City, Pine County, Minnesota, was born in Hungary. Then in 1910 was listed as being born in Hungaria, in 1920 was listed as being born in Romania, but his language was German. Where were the German speaking Hungarian - Romanians at? Is this possible that even though he was from Hungary - Romania (I understand that the boundries changed around these time periods) he would speak German?

You see I cannot find my John Mike after 1908. I got this information mainly from his marriage license and finding his only son (my grandpa) in the Minnesota census. I figure my great grandma (the one that John Mike was married to) knew alot more about John than she let the family know.

Thank you to anyone who can possibly help me. Dena
