It is possible that the name should be spelled VOJVOD.
The Slovak Republic's phone book lists a name Vojvoda, Vojvodik, Vojvodinsky.
www.zoznamst.sk

The Ellis Island website is listing 3 VOIVODs plus few others alternate spelling. Were you able to check them out.

The Romanian phone site is at http://www.whitepages.ro

The Slovenian phone site is listing a name Vojvoda, Vojvodic.

The Croatian phone site is listing Vojvoda and Vojvodic.

Do you have a name of a town for your ancestor? Without it you can do research in the "old country".

The www.google.com gives out 278 hits for Vojvod(a).
The Social Security Death Index is listing 2 Louis Voivod?
One of them your ancestor? One of them must be your ancestor since the years are same. Was there no mention of a town? Have you looked in a census for any further information?
If he was naturalized citizen there should be some more info to go on.
The LDS-Mormons have filmed the church records but you need to know a name of a town.
