Hello Jeremy.
My wife is a distant relative of yours. Her grandmother, Klara Ast was born about 1890 in Illischestie. Most Germans in Illiescheste resettled to Silesia, now Polen in 1939. In 1945 many of them went to Austria and Germany. I'm somewhat familiar with her family history and was surprised to read that your ggfather Heinrich Ast went to the State of Washington in 1887.
I knew three of Klaras brothers went there about 1905. My wife and her mother visited the families in Washington about 1980. My wife's family lives in Germany, we live around Chicago.
