I have a David Cawte at Croydon in 1841 - 71,
I suspect he came from Hampshire originally, although I haven't yet been able to find exactly where, other members of my family have always said that the Cawtes originated in France but I have found it difficult to find much info on them at all and would be interested to hear more.
