Thanks for the info Jack. I didn't know the history of the name, only that it was probably a corruption of the Hugenot original. My husband's family are still in Portsmouth and Plymouth. One of them has done some research on the name but hasn't shared it. My husband's brother was interested in research but hasn't started yet. One day when I'm a bit further down the road with my family I may start searching seriously. I am tempted when I'm looking at the GRO because the Cawtes are generally on the same page as my lot, and it's a fair bet that everyone is related somewhere.
I'll pass on the info you sent, to the family and if I do find anything more out I'll let you know. I would be interested to know where you hail from and if you link in with us.
