I had no idea the surname was Romanian. I understood that it was a corruption of a French surname that was changed when they escaped the Hugenot revolt in France. Most of the Cawtes in England start in Portsmouth and gradually moved away from Hampshire. My husband's father came from Portsmouth and now lives in Newark, Notts.
