Transylvania-Czernowitz or Chanovitz

I am trying to research my grandfather who immigrated to the USA. He was born in Czernowitz or Chanovitz about 1892, I believe. I know his name was changed to Frank Mauriber upon arrival in the States. Can anyone give me ideas on how the surname may have translated to Romanian? Or where to start this search?
