Re: Origin of surname ROLTON

I recently purchased a family coat of arms and family name history. The history indicated that Rolton is of habitation origin and relates to where the original bearer was born or resided. In our case "Rolleston", of which there are at least 3 in in central England.

One of the earliest references to Rolton is the baptism of John Rolton, son of John Rolton in Cavendish, County Suffolk in 1612. Also, the wedding of Joseph Rolton to Mary Cuslin in Whittington, Worcestershire in 1770.

Another suggestion as to origin has been the mispelling of Roulston or Bolton many years ago.

What of me? I know that my Grandad was one of a number of brothers, seven I think, from London, England. He moved to Manchester, England in the 1920s.

One thing I do know is that there are not very many of us!

Please contact me if I can be of further help or assistance.

Michael Rolton
