Rollo Clan Association April 2007

Cameron Rollo

It is with deep regret that we have to tell you that Cameron Rollo died suddenly on 2nd March. In accordance with his wishes his body was left to medical research and there was no funeral. A small service was held in his home on 4th April.

Born in 1950, Cameron was brought up in Glasgow. He was educated at Allan Glen’s School and Glasgow University. After graduation, he worked as a Social Worker in the Glasgow. Later he became a lecturer in Social Care at Clydebank College until he took early retirement on grounds of ill health.

Cameron served the Rollo Clan Association as a committee member for over 25 years. At various times he was Secretary, Vice-president and President, but most of us will remember him as Archivist, a post created for him in recognition of his great interest in all things Rollo. He started collating information on Clan history in the early 1980’s. “La Fortune Passepartout”, the booklet published for the Association’s silver anniversary in 1993, and it’s updated version for the year 2000, were to be companions to a much more ambitious “History of the Rollo Clan” which he intended to produce.

It was largely due to the work of Cameron that we are in contact with members of the Rollo family all over the world. In 1984 he wrote to all Rollos in the Canadian telephone directories, and went on to do the same for Australia, New Zealand and USA. As a result of this publicity there was a big increase in membership, and a greatly increased flow of information into the Clan archives. There were many requests for genealogical information and Cameron was more than happy to carry out research on members’ behalf. He said, “My main pleasure and interest is contact with members home and abroad”. Many, many people –especially after the arrival of the Internet – enjoyed corresponding with him and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm. We have all lost a great friend.

We send our condolences to his wife, Jo, to his mother, Dorothy, to his sister, Linda, and family
