People of Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Channel Islands would undergo torture rather than say they were English. No, definitely not. I suspect the Isle of Man connection may be wrong, in which case you need to find his parents names somewhere in England. Holidaying on the IOM was probably unlikely with the mother so near to giving birth. He must have done an apprenticeship somewhere for watchmaking. I'd suggest searching English apprenticeship records.
