Thank you for your message. Our family has been quite active in using DNA testing to try to piece together the ancestry of the Hollingsworths, and we have a puzzle. There seem to be two major Hollingsworth/Hollingworth families in England. One links the family members in Cheshire, Derby, Nottingham, and Stafford (and apparently the FitzRandolphs of Langton Hall, Nottingham, as well) while the other family seems to be in Lincoln, Cambridge, Hertford, and Essex. Henry Hollinsworth's descendants match neither. He also does not match the Hollingsworths of County Down either, but does match the family in County Wexford. From your family research, how frequently did families change surnames in the 1500? We are familiar with a Thomas de Bramhole who later styled himself Thomas de Holyngworth about 1450? Alternatively, if Henry were illegitimate, would that have been an incentive for him to emigrate to Ireland? Or would bastardy in his background have made Henry unwelcome to the religious leaders of the Ulster Plantation? Doug Hollingsworth Notify Administrator about this message?
