He was a merchant and a 'gent' Again because I am not familiar with British ways, I don't really know the different significances between Sir & Gentleman ... but are those types of titles inherited ? I often see in scholarly works, the immigrant ROLFE (who married Pocahontas) called a Sir ... are you saying he was the first one in his family to gain the title of Sir ?
