Dave,

This is your lucky day! I recently answered this same question for someone else.

According to the research of Richard W. Davis (www.mennosearch.com), this Barbara Rohrer was born c.1794 and she married Jacob Lauber on 12 Jan 1818.

Barbara was the youngest child (out of 10) of Jacob Rohrer (1746-1822) and Barbara (?). As you may know, there were a whole lot of "Jacob Rohrers" in those days, so it gets very confusing. This Jacob had a son Jacob, and was therefore often known as Jacob Rohrer Sr. And not only did he marry a woman named Barbara, he had a sister named Barbara as well. I guess by the 10th child, he had run out of names and had to name his daughter Barbara too.

This Jacob Rohrer Sr. was the one who amassed some 2200 acres of land surrounding the village of Chewsville, a couple miles east of Hagerstown. He gave some of the land to daughter Barbara and her new husband in 1818. Apparently he ran into legal problems the last few years of his life and ended up selling off much of his land before he died. There are 100's of pages of court proceedings.

Jacob Sr.'s father was (you guessed it) Jacob Rohrer (1703-1758) who married Feronica (Verena) Bär, herself quite a wheeler-dealer in land. This older Jacob was the very first Rohrer to obtain land in Washington County. He emigrated on the ship Britannia in 1731. In 1738, he obtained his first property in Washington County (50 acres), which he named "Jacob's Welfare". This is the property on which "Trovinger's Mill" was built by Jacob and his brother Frederick (c1696-1762+). The mill is still standing and is a historic landmark. This piece of property became the centerpiece of the land eventually acquired by son Jacob Sr.

The Frederick who was the older Jacob's brother was my GGGGGG Grandfather. He emigrated along with son Samuel and the rest of his family on the ship Restauration in 1747. Jacob actually sold his original "Jacob's Welfare" parcel and another named "Defiance" to his brother Frederick, but eventually this land came back to Jacob Sr.

Davis has tons more information about this family. He has written a 35-page paper on the (mostly) Mennonite Rohrers, available from his website (for a membership fee). He's traced this family back to the mid-1500's in Switzerland. Pretty impressive. Well worth it if you're interested in researching the Rohrers or most of the other early Mennonite families.
